Centre for American Sculpture Wildlife preserve
Recognised as one of the top 5 gardens in the south and one of the top 5 coastal gardens in the US plus the largest collection of American sculpture in the country. Just some of the reasons why you should add Brookgreen Gardens to your list of things to do on your next visit to the Myrtle Beach area.

Formed in 1931 by Archer and Anna Hyatt Huntington as a non-profit organisation, to preserve the native flora and fauna and display objects of art within that setting.

It is one of the country's leading cultural and educational institutions and a National Historic Landmark.

The gardens are extensive with many individual
themes and settings with several ponds and of
course the sculptures providing the focus.

Entrance to the gardens is by a weekly ticket so
be sure to visit Brookgreen at the beginning of
your stay in order to make the most of it.
There is too much to see in one visit.

We have visited the gardens at various times
of the year and there is always something of
interest regardless of season.

There is a welcome centre, gift shop and a sculpture gallery at the front of the gardens and nestled near the back of the gardens is a small café.

The perfect retreat for a quiet afternoon tea or perhaps a cold drink on a hot day.

Apart from the gardens there are other areas of interest and many special events take place throughout the year so be sure to check with Brookgreen to see what is on during your visit.

One of our favourite moments was the Sunday afternoon boat ride which takes you along the inland waterways and talks about the history of the rice plantations in the area.

Possibly the most popular event takes place in early December.

Nights of a thousand candles shows the gardens in a new light and provides much entertainment including carol singers in traditional costume and other live entertainment.

For wildlife enthusiasts Brookgreen Gardens is a must. The wildlife trail takes you through two aviaries and past several other wildlife pens. The highlights are the wetland bird and raptor aviaries where you walk in among the birds.

You will get up close and personal with a variety of herons, egrets, Ibis and other wetland birds and you cannot fail to be moved by the majesty of the birds of prey in the Raptor aviary.

In addition to the birdlife you will also see otters, alligators, wild fox and if you are lucky you will see a herd of deer.
