By 1850 1 million pounds of rice was being produced. Dr Henry Massingberd Tucker, born 1831, in turn inherited the Plantation and served with the Confederate army for 4 years up to his surrender with Lee at Appomattox. On returning from visiting patients Dr Tucker would ring the Plantation gatehouse bell with his riding crop. Shortly after his death in 1904, during a rainy night, the Plantation bell began to ring and was heard each night following. Eventually the successive owners had it removed after losing so much sleep. Over the years it is claimed Dr Tucker has been seen in his room and on the back staircase which still exists to this day. |
