Dining
The area is renowned for fine dining. There are many restaurants in Pawleys Island and Litchfield and Murrells Inlet, known as the sea food capital of South Carolina, is less than ten minutes drive away.

History
Pawleys Island is the oldest sea side resort in the US as it was once the holiday retreat for many plantation owners. The whole area was once covered in rice and indigo plantations and colonial style architecture is still favoured.

The Island

A wonderful mix of breathtaking scenery with the beach
on one side and the salt marsh teeming with wildlife
on the other it is a nature lovers paradise.

For history buffs it is nice to walk along the historic district reading the many signs relating to the original homes
on the island.

Murrells Inlet
Just a few minutes north of Litchfield is Murrells Inlet, the seafood capital of South Carolina and home to many fine restaurants and bars.

With breathtaking views of the salt marshes, with
Garden City Beach and the ocean beyond,
it is a great place to dine at sunset.

Sea fishing trips can be arranged locally.

Local attractions

Brookgreen Gardens – voted one of the top five gardens in the south it boasts the largest collection of American sculpture in the USA complementing the formal planting of the gardens themselves.

There is also a wildlife collection including, wetland birdlife, otters, raptors and alligators.

Brookgreen also run river boat trips where you can learn about the history of the rice plantations in the area.

During a couple of weekends in early December they run 'nights of a thousand candles'. A night time event with the gardens lit by candles and entertainers including carol singers dressed in traditional garb.

The entrance ticket is a 7 day pass so you do not need to take it all in in one day.

Huntington State Park – opposite Brookgreen Gardens, Huntington has a fantastic beach and also provides many walks showcasing the local habitats and wildlife.

The name Huntington comes from the family who established Brookgreen Gardens in the early 1930's. Archer Milton Huntington became an expert in Hispanic culture and from this came the inspiration for the spanish fortress style home 'Atalaya' which is part of the property.

Archers wife Anna Vaughn Hyatt became a sculptor which
explains the link between art and nature found at
Brookgreen Gardens.

Hobcaw Barony – Former home of millionaire Bernard Baruch and his daughter, Belle. A 17,500 acre property with 3,000 acres of old rice fields. Saltwater and freshwater wetlands
and maritime forest make up
the rest of the property.

It is thought that Hobcaw Barony is the sight where the Spanish first attempted to settle in 1526 which would make it the oldest European settlement in the US.

Georgetown – A 20 minute drive south will find you in Georgetown with its' historic waterfront area and colonial architecture.

Along Main Street you will find the Kaminsky House Museum and the Rice Museum which are both worth a visit.

Apart from Hobcaw Barony there are another two historic houses just outside the city.

Hopseewee Plantation, shown here on the left and Hampton Plantation on the right. Both can be found off highway 17 south heading towards Charleston.

Historic Charleston

Just a 1.5 hour drive south of Pawleys Island you will find the wonderful city of Charleston with its rich naval and colonial history, elegant architecture and low country traditions.
