Charleston is about 70 miles south of Pawleys Island and is well worth a visit with it's colonial architecture and civil war history, it is a wonderful city. Just before you get to Charleston, off highway 17, At the lower end of the city centre down by the battery, overlooking the harbour you will find many original colonial houses such as the one on the left. |

| Charleston Attractions are many and varied. The naval museum at Patriots Point, featuring the world war II aircraft carrier - Yorktown, points to more recent history.
Fort Moultrie, in Charleston harbour, featured in both the war of Independence and the US Civil War. Indeed it is where the opening shots were fired in the civil war. Outside Charleston are several historic houses including Magnolia Gardens shown here which also includes the Audubon Swamp Garden (below).
